The Project

Video-documentary by Susanne Elgeti

By 2016, the Akademie der Künste had already initiated an ambitious and international project: Labor Beethoven, supervised by the Music Section, offered a team of young composers and artists from Tel Aviv, Basel and Thessaloniki an open forum for artistic exchange and experimentation over a period of three years. As part of the nationwide Beethoven 2020 anniversary celebrations, the laboratory examined ways to the avant-garde and of crossing boundaries.

Most recently, the Labor gave a guest performance at MOMus - Πειραματικό Κέντρο Τεχνών / Experimental Center for the Arts, Thessaloniki. In an exhibition and two concerts the participants presented the results of their works (Plattform Thessaloniki).

Beethoven

In many key moments of his music, Beethoven steps outside of reality and, perhaps precisely because of this, creates pure auditory sensation. In this sense, his music is crazy, it moves things away from where they are usually found.

The artistic director of the project, Casper Johannes Walter, formulated further thoughts on Beethoven's "crazy" Musik and the Labor Beethoven project for the ninth edition of the Journal der Künste, published in January 2019.
